A fantastic roller-coaster ride, heres a taster:-“Push The Button”I’m often asked “How on earth did you become a project manager?” Now depending on where you put the emphasis in the sentence, you can take that in one of two ways.

The thin-skinned may suspect a slight on their professionalism. The thick-skinned would view it as a question about what attracted you to the magical world of project management. So I’m not known as “Rhino Hide” for nothing, so if you’re sitting comfortably, then I’ll begin. Many of you may know, that in a previous life I was a fast-jet navigator in the RAF. So one day I was sat in the crew-room, when the Senior Weapons Instructor burst in, shouting excitedly, “I need a volunteer”.

I was young and foolish, I didn’t realise the dark connotations of the word ‘volunteer’ in the military context and also I never willingly turned down a sortie. My hand went up and I’m sure, like a scene from a Hammer Horror B movie, the crew-room lights flickered ominously as I took my first small step towards being drawn into the murky world of flight trials.

(Not test-flying, which is a completely different form of madness, but pretty close). So here’s the brief. Take one Tornado fighter, fully tooled up with a spanking new chaff & flare pod, a new library for the Radar Warning Receiver (RWR), then fly around Salisbury Plain trying not to get shot down by the Army, who were equipped with a whole bunch of different radar systems and missiles and who generally hated the RAF.

I forgot to mention, it was all quite tense at this point, Saddam was rattling sabres and would shortly invade Kuwait, so the procurement system which would normally deliver the desired product at glacial pace, several years out-of-date and squillions over-budget, (oh how times have changed) was completely by-passed, leaving a friendly supplier to strap on a Gucci bit of kit and away we went.
